India took home five medals, including three gold, to assert their supremacy at the 18th Qatar International Regatta ‘Sail the Gulf 2010,’ which concluded yesterday at the Doha Sailing Club.
On the back of their dominating performance in the Optimist class, Malaysia were second with six medals, which included one gold, two silver and three bronze. Tunisia stood third overall with one gold and two silver medals in the five-day event that featured over 180 sailors from 28 countries.
While India had guaranteed themselves two gold medals, in 470 and Hobie 16 classes, Rajesh Chauhan added one more to their tally with a victory in the Laser Radial.
Chauhan, who had finished tied on 20 points with overnight leader Youssef Akrout of Tunisia, left it late to clinch the 10th and final race to finish on 26 points and secure the win by nine points.
“The first race did not go well for me today,” said Chauhan, indicating to his eighth position in the opening race yesterday. That did not harm him too much, though, as Akrout fared even worse, crossing the line only in tenth place.
“But I was all focused in the final race and won it with a comfortable margin,” explained Chauhan, who came home ahead of Malaysia’s Khairul Nizam.
Nizam’s two second-place finishes proved decisive as he edged Algeria’s Mohammed El Amine to capture third place on 52 points.
Having secured his win in 470, Pushparajan Muttu and his crew Narendra Singh decided to play it safe yesterday. They finished second to the Hungarian pair of Imre Varadi and Aron Serke in the final two races to wind up the competition on 11 points. The Hungarians, who finished with 15 points, took home silver.
Qatar’s Amro Yousry and Fahad al-Malki, who stood fourth and third respectively yesterday, secured bronze for the hosts by finishing on 35 points.
An all-Indian battle raged on in the Hobie 16, with Yuvraj Singh and Samal Pradhan eventually capturing gold, finishing ahead of compatriots Yakobu Kalaga and Rajeev Kumar.
Kalaga and Kumar gave it everything and won the final two races to narrow the gap on the leaders. But they lost the gold by two points as Singh and Pradhan always maintained a safe distance to take second and third and finish on top with 15 points.
“We knew the gold medal was there for the taking. We decided against taking any risks today but we did well enough to keep them (Kalaga and Kumar) at bay,” Pradhan said after yesterday’s races. “Now our next goal will be to perform well at the Asian Games,” added the Indian Navy sailor. The bronze medal went to Oman’s Mohammed al-Alwai and Akram al-Wahaibi.
Tunisia proved their mettle in the Laser Standard with Hafedh Ben Fakhet and Zine El Abidine taking up the top two places, while Bijay Rout added a bronze to take India’s tally to five medals in the regatta.
Malaysia swept all three medals in the Optimist class with Ahmad Latif successfully defending his title after a win and fourth place yesterday to finish on 19 points. Ahmad Syukri took silver with 22 points, two ahead of last year’s silver medallist Mohammed Farhan.
Bahrain’s Faisal al-Naar, who started the day with a nine-point lead in the Laser 4.7 class, won the fifth and ninth races to finish on 19 points for gold.
The Malaysians completed the podium with Nur Amirah (31pts) taking silver and Mohammed Amirul (43pts) scooping bronze after Algeria’s Zakaria Khoualed was disqualified for an infringement in the final race.

Final results: Optimist: 1. Ahmed Latif (MAS) 19pts, 2. Ahmed Syukri (MAS) 22ts, 3. Mohammed Farhan (MAS) 24pts
